                                Angie Fairbanks, Action Coach

As Albert Schweitzer says, “Giving” is a virtue, means to bestow, especially officially, confer; to accord or tender to another, to entrust to another. This is the Law of all creation: Give and you shall receive. "Give and it shall be given unto you, good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again." "Every good and perfect gift comes from above, from the Father of Lights. You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it's a little thing, do something for others - something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.

I personally wanted to thank all of you who gave a generous donation to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and the Salvation Army.  As a child of a single mother, I spent most holidays at the Salvation Army and it means the world to me to be amongst all of you.  With your help, we were able to donate 132 items of food and collected 31 toys.  I would also like to personally thank Molly Hutchinson for all she has done for me and for her assistance in making the holiday party a success.  I would also like to thank Valerie Hahn for making the boxes and Vickie DiMambro for taking the items to the designated locations.  All three of you gave numerous amounts of hours to PSN and it is much appreciated.

The holidays are about giving and PSN made a lot of families very happy this holiday season.  Hats off to you all and I raise glass and say – HAPPY NEW YEAR and look forward to a spectacular 2010. Again, thank you ALL for your kind donations this holiday season.

Sales Quote of the Month

“Rapport is defined with several words: relation, connection, accord, harmony, and agreement. Rapport is a subtle yet significant aspect of the connection process. If you find common interests with a prospective connection, you can establish a business friendship. People are more likely to buy from a friend than a salesman. What do you do to establish rapport? Are you sharp enough to find something in common besides business after you open the conversation?” – Jeffrey Gitomer

NETWORKING TIPS

SOCIAL MEDIA: 5 Reasons Why It Will Increase Your Sales

If you have not visited Michael Krause’s  from Sales Sense site you need to! He has some excellent Webinars and Newsletters that I have found very helpful to me and my business!- Valerie Hahn-Printers Plus LLC

When it comes to social media small and medium-sized businesses just want to know one thing: is it worth it?

Yes. Here are 5 reasons why.

1. Stay Four Moves Ahead of the Competition

A recent study conducted by the Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth discovered that America’s fastest growing private companies adopt social media marketing initiatives at much higher rates than other companies.

Meanwhile, Vistaprint, a company specializing in small-businesses conducted a study on small business marketing trends. They found that small businesses are likely to increase their use of online marketing tactics in the coming year.

The takeaway: small businesses embracing online tactics now will grow at a higher rate in the future. If they aren’t already, trends indicate your competitors will extend their marketing into social media in 2010. Those who do are poised for faster growth and increased sales. Are you?

2. Greater Reach

Facebook has over 350 million followers, up 25 percent from less than a year ago. As of Sept. 2009, Linked In had over 109,300 participants from just Rochester, NY or approximately 10 percent of the city’s population. In the U.S., 1 in 20 people has a Twitter account. You Tube is outpacing Twitter.

The takeaway: use social media to get your information in front of many people who are interested in what you have to say. Connecting with prospects is the first step to making a sale. How many quality prospects did you reach today?

3. Powerful Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Search engines love activity. Social media participation increases your online presence. Posting fresh content on your site and broadcasting the link on your social media channels also improves your SEO.

The takeway: when a prospect does a search for your business they will find proof of your activity in the form of multiple links to your site. Your site will rank higher than someone who has the equivalent of an electronic brochure for a website. Or is your site the one that is the electronic brochure?

4. Absence is Suspicious

Prospects today turn to the internet to get their information. Your absence is no longer simply missed, it raises a red flag. Prospects trust businesses with an online presence.

The takeaway: Prospects equate an online absence with a business that has nothing to say and is disengaged with customers. Or they will wonder what you’re hiding. When it comes to making a purchasing decision customers will turn to vendors they can find and trust. Are you claiming excellent customer service while making it difficult for customers to find you?

5. Social Media Respects Compressed Schedules.

Social media activity shows prospects who you are, what you do, how and where you do it. A prospect can gather this information and get their answers all before the first conversation. They will see you as a trusted source of information, a critical factor when it comes time for them to pull the sale trigger.

The takeaway: people follow the path of least resistance. Use social media to give them that path. Do you still insist prospects give up their time to meet you in order to gather information they can get online…from your competitors?

BUSINESS TIPS

Building Value in Your Company  from ActionCOACH

Every decision you make should be directed toward building value in your company, even if you don’t intend to sell for years to come.

Following are five factors that will make your company appealing to an outsider:

•·      a healthy income stream

•·      a tidy profit after all costs and overhead are paid out

•·      a proven plan of marketing that produces consistent sales

•·      a strong client/customer base

•·      an organized, efficient work-flow system

The sixth, and perhaps the most important factor is: If you leave the business, what happens to it?

Service providers beware: The more the business relies solely on you, the less valuable it is.  Your “irreplace-ability” may do wonders for your ego but little for your pocketbook when it comes time to sell the business.

It’s never too late to set your business up as if you were going to sell it…that way you’ll be ready, should the need arise, rather than regretting what you might have done, “if only you’d have…”

3 Tips For Differentiating Your Company

If you are a small-to-medium sized business wanting to differentiate your company from competitors, here are a few tips to consider:

Know the Enemy
You must know the competition.  Collect and compare their marketing documents, including advertisements, web pages, white papers, and sales brochures.  Identify their main marketing messages and note similarities and overlap between vendors.  Analyze product presentations and descriptions.  From the compiled data, evaluate the differences and similarities to your value proposition.  Your marketing message should emphasize the differences, but confirm the similarities.

Be the Customer
View the different marketing pitches from the prospect’s perspective.  What would s/he like about the competition’s marketing?  And about your company’s pitch?  The optimal point of differentiation will emphasize the capability you offer that the prospect values the most.

Communicate the message consistently
To achieve maximum effect, the new marketing message must be communicated consistently across all media and sales support materials.  Consider consumer testing of the new message to a small audience to confirm it’s positive effect.  If it is successful, expand it into all media.

Depending on the company’s marketing budget and communications strategy, it may take up to six months or more for your new message to gain traction.

Member of the Month

Marge Frandsen

Marge Frandsen was introduced to PSN by Kristie Hawke almost 4 years ago.

Marge is an agent with Trans-Action Real Estate.  Her goal is to help her clients find a home they will love.  In order to do so, she helps clients discover just what they are looking for in a home. Marge says she will “work herself to death” for her clients to help them accomplish this goal.

Marge worked for the IRS and has been involved in Washoe County and Regional Planning Commissions.  She currently is on the board of her homeowners association, volunteers for Nevada Women’s Expo and SWOTY.  She is very involved in local politics and volunteers for those candidates she supports.

Marge is married with two grown children and four grandchildren, all whom she is very proud of.  Reading and sketching take up what spare time she has.  She moved to Reno in 1974 and has watched it change from a small town to the city it is today.

Member of the Month

Tressa O’Lear

Tressa O’Lear is the proud owner of Together Dating Service in Reno and has been a PSN member for almost 7 years. Tressa joined Together in South Carolina 20 years ago and immediately loved helping people establish relationships. She was promoted to Manager and in 1990 and lead the office to Number 2 out of 82 offices. As a result she has moved west to offices around the country managing them into booming productive locations. She bought the Reno location in April, 1999.

Together’s main clients are professionals 35 and up; mostly in the 40 – 50 age range. They want a meaningful relationship and realize they need help in finding one.   At Together, Tressa conducts a personal interview and a background check on each person.  She maintains communication with each client every step of the way to ensure any potential problems are handled immediately and she has a happy client.  This is what sets her apart from other dating services, especially online services.  Online services can’t provide the personal service Tressa provides and are no longer real competition.

Tressa believes the value of PSN is in building relationships with members so she can recommend them with confidence and she does so every chance she gets.

She is a widow, has no children but does have “the perfect dog”.  Her hobbies are gardening, reading and anything to do with water, swimming, fishing, sailing and skiing.

Change and Attitude

We are being faced with change faster than ever in today’s society. Our political leadership, environment, and economy are making rapid and drastic changes.  How can we meet the challenges of a constantly changing world and stay focused on our dreams?  By having a positive attitude and taking action! Not only do we need to embrace change, but we also need to be reminded how important our attitude is to achieve successful change.

“If you want to be successful, you must be willing to be uncomfortable. To achieve your goals and realize your potential, you must be willing to be uncomfortable undefined to do things that you’re afraid to do. That’s how you develop your potential! Sounds so simple, doesn’t it? And yet, what do most people do when they face a frightening situation or new activity? They back away from the fear. They don’t take action and action and attitude are everything when embracing change.

Show me a successful person and I’ll show you someone who confronts his or her fears and takes action! What I am talking about here, are those challenges that stand in the way of your personal and professional growth. These are the things that scare you undefined but which you know is necessary if you’re going to get what you want in life.

So, stretch yourself. Confront your fears and be willing to expand your comfort zone. The courage muscle can be developed just like any other muscle undefined with exercise. And when you do an activity outside your comfort zone a few times, you know what happens? That same activity becomes part of your comfort zone! There’s another bonus when you’re willing to expand your comfort zone. When you push through fear and take action in some areas of your life, you’ll develop confidence in other areas, as well. It’s true! When I became more comfortable as a speaker, I also became a better salesperson… a better businessperson… a better listener… the list goes on and on. You can try to dance around it all you want. But you won’t develop your abilities to the fullest unless you’re willing to be uncomfortable. Life doesn’t reward those who refuse to expose themselves to difficulties and challenges. It’s important that you put yourself in a position to win undefined and that means taking action despite fear. Confront your fears… and you’re on the way to developing your potential and leading the exciting, fulfilling life you deserve. It’s a decision you’ll never regret!

Principles from Attitude is Everything.

PSN_IM_header.jpg

Does Your Website Contain Testimonials?

If you answered, “yes” to the question in the title, then you’re going to want to read this entire article.  The Federal Trade Commission has new, strict guidelines pertaining to testimonials that are important for all website owners to understand.  The FTC is instituting a barrage of new guidelines (on 12.01.09) designed to protect consumers who purchase products and services online.  In a nutshell, the FTC is forcing online business owners to disclose material facts in their testimonials so that consumers may make an informed decision whether or not to purchase whatever you happen to be selling.

In this, the last of the series I’ve written about the new FTC guidelines, I thought it would be fun to use the PSN website as an example of how these new guidelines come into play.  But before I delve into using PSN’s website within fictitious examples, I first want to highlight the new testimonial guidelines that must be followed when it comes to addressing RESULTS:

Compensation - You must disclose to your website reader if the testimonial provider is receiving something of value from you (such as free products, free services, advertising or cash), in exchange for their testimonial.

For example, if PSN were to solicit and receive a testimonial from PSN member #256, who was given a FREE business card ad in the monthly newsletter for 3 full months plus a $10.00 discount off her/his lunch for one month, this relationship would need to be revealed to the PSN website readers.  Here’s why the FTC is implementing this new guideline:  Do you think these types of freebies might influence what the testimonial provider is going to say about PSN, our organization, and the benefits we offer our members? Of course they could!  Would the same type of testimonial be typical from those who did not receive the gifts from us? More than likely NOT!

Bottom line:  If your website testimonial provider has been compensated in any way, in exchange for their testimonial, you are required by law to make the circumstances of that compensation known to the consumers who visit your website.  [I strongly urge you to contact your attorney for his/her professional advice on this matter if you intend to include testimonials on your website after Dec. 1, 2009.]

Context - If your testimonial provider makes claims about results achieved with your products and services, what the testimonial doesn’t say could be considered a deceptive trade practice by the FTC because important facts were omitted from the testimonial. These are facts that are material because they were essential to the results achieved by the testimonial giver.

For example, PSN member #256 provides PSN with a testimonial that states they garnered 3 new $1500.00 revenue generating clients just from being a member of PSN for only 2 months.  However, the testimonial doesn’t disclose that PSN member #256 and her two employees took turns working the PSN booth at The Nevada Women’s Expo for the duration of the entire event. Nor does it disclose that over the next 10 days, following the event, they personally called every single person that visited the PSN booth (and every person they spoke with while walking around the venue) that provided a contact number, in order to generate that income. It also doesn’t disclose that the company’s virtual assistant contacted every person that provided an email address in order to present them with an Expo Participant Discounted Sales Offer.  The testimonial also doesn’t state the net income after deducting labor costs, printed materials, and other marketing costs.

If the testimonials on your website omit pertinent facts such as those just stated, that’s the type of testimonial that can land you in trouble with the FTC.  Why? Because the original testimonial is deceptive.  The typical visitor to the PSN website will not be able to achieve similar results just from being a PSN member. (Oh, if we only could!)

Bottom line:  Make sure the visitor’s to your website expectations with regard to your products and services are based on “All the facts and circumstances that generated the results you are displaying.”  Doing otherwise will be interpreted by the FTC as presenting expectations to your website visitors that are based on false assumptions because of material omissions.  And… that will land you in hot water and could cost you up to $11,000 in fines for each testimonial that does not meet the new criteria!  OUCH!

Message from the President

Angie Fairbanks, Action Coach

Challenges are normal

A true motivational "hero," the late Norman Vincent Peale once said, "there is   only one group of people that don't have problems…and they are all dead.  Problems or challenges are a sign of life.  So, the more problems you have the more alive you are."  An addition that might be made to Norman's quote might be, "if you don't have any challenges today maybe you are on the way out of here and you don't know it yet."

You might take this as a tong-in-cheek philosophy of life; however it is closer to the truth than you might think.  One thing we have all learned is that everyone has challenges.  Some of us have relationship problems, others have financial ones, some face career challenges, others struggle with health issues, some have social issues, while others face difficult business challenges.  No one is immune to adversity in life, right?

The key to success, happiness, peace, and life balance is to accept the issues, negatives, situations, challenges, struggles (whatever you want to call them) as a part of the life process of becoming, learning, and growing.  Failures, whiners, or victims see problems as life "picking on them."  Winners in life (or victors), on the other hand, regardless of their position, status, age, or circumstances see challenges and adversity as a catalyst for becoming better, stronger, wiser, and more aware of the reality of their life.

Challenges are not positive or negative they just "are."  They are simple happenings.  It isn't what is happening in your life that matters it is how you choose to see it, and what you do with it.  Whether they are perceived as negative or positive is entirely up to you and your life outlook.

Learn to see the negatives as loving teachers in your life bringing you the opportunity to get a clearer vision of where you may need attitude adjustments, improved thinking, or better skills.

Why not make a list of all of your challenges and, one-by-one ask yourself a few questions, such as:                                                                            q  is there anything I can do about this - now or later?

q  is it going to last forever?

q  what would my hero, mentor or someone I respect do about this?

q  is this a recurring situation in my life?

q  why?

These should get you started.  Now, add some of your own.

And that's worth thinking about…

While it has been my joy to serve as PSN's web-mistress for the last 2 years, I am delighted to introduce the new Superwoman who will take over as Web-Mistress for next years term.  I've called her Superwoman for quite some time, as whenever I've called her with web related questions, she has given expert advice in a simple, easy to understand manner.  Unlike me, our new web-mistress has an extensive background and experience with websites and is a master word-smith.  Maureen Mika has a gift with words as well as technology, gifts she will no doubt utilize to maintain and expand the look and reach of our website.  I started working on the "website committee" when I joined PSN and was very surprised to find, shortly after volunteering, I was the "committee".  Having no prior experience with websites, at all, it has been an amazing learning experience I wouldn't trade for anything.  I am, however, looking forward to Maureen taking over, as what I have found to be something to learn, she will most likely find as something easy to teach.  Thank you for volunteering Maureen, we are lucky to have your expertise once again, in service of PSN.

Most Sincerely,

Molly Hutchinson

Is Your Website Putting You at Risk of Bankrupting YOUR Business?

Do you own a website that markets your business? Do you have more than one business with an online presence? If so, are you displaying any of the following legal forms on your website?

Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) Notice

 Terms and Conditions of Use

 Privacy Policy

 Anti-Spam Policy

 External Links Policy

 Earnings Disclaimer

 Affiliate Agreement

If you answered ‘No!’, then you are at extreme risk of your website putting you in bankruptcy court, losing your home and potentially facing jail time.  I’m not trying to scare you, but I am trying to get your attention!  Do keep reading.

If you answered ‘Yes.’, then there are a couple of more questions you should ask yourself?

•1)   Am I certain that my websites’ legal notices were written by a qualified attorney that specializes in internet marketing?

•2)   Am I certain that I have all of the legal forms necessary to reduce my liability risk as an internet marketer or a business with an online presence?

Not so long ago, I answered ‘No!’ to these questions during an online training class I was taking.  I had no idea that I needed these forms on my website. The internet guru teaching the course, Joel Comm, recommended that his students check out the Website Legal Forms Generator software program to educate ourselves on what each of the forms were and why we needed them on our websites.  I did as Joel suggested and I’ve protected my assets, business and personal, ever since!

The Website Legal Forms Generator software…

  •    is user friendly,
  •    guarantees you peace of mind because these forms have been drafted by  attorneys from the Internet Attorneys Association LLC
  •    can be used to generate legal forms for every website you own,
  •    gets the job done in 17 minutes of less
  •     is a ‘One Time Purchase’ – (not a monthly recurring expense)… and
  •      normally sells for less than $150 but currently is on sale for $97.00!

Just click on one of my affiliate link above to learn more about how you, too, may limit your liability and protect your assets!

The SWOTY donation check for 2009 was presented to Manal Toppozada at the July luncheon.  Manal  is the Executive Director of The Note-Ables.   A total donation of $6,500 was presented to the Note-Ables by PSN.  Manal spoke on the use of this money to subsidize those disabled adults and children that cannot afford to pay for their lessons or participate in the overall program.  All members should be extremely proud of this donation considering the current state of the economy.

j0395913.jpgAs most of us know, attitude is everything.  If your boss or friend smiles at you, then, generally, you are in a good mood and all is well.  If that person is grumpy, then you, usually, become moody as well.

We say people and situations ruin our day.  But it is really our choice on how we want to face things.  The following little story is a favorite of mine and speaks volumes about personally controlling your outlook in “seemingly” adverse conditions.

A little old lady went to the mirror one morning and noticed that she had only three hairs on her head. As she looked into the mirror, she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today." That's exactly what she did. And, she had a great day.

The next morning, at the mirror once again, the little old lady noticed that she only had two hairs on her head. Looking herself right in the eye, she said, "Today, I think I'll part my hair down the middle." That's exactly what she did. And, she had a great day.

The next day, as the little old lady looked into the mirror, there was only one hair on her head. She looked at that one lonely hair and said, "Today I think I'll wear my hair in a pony tail." That's exactly what she did. And she had a great day.

The following morning the little old lady looked into the mirror and there wasn't a single hair on her head. Her eyes lit up, and she said, "Yeah! I don't have to fix my hair today!"

Daily, we are each given the same 24 hours.  What makes them different is how we use them.
